The Board of Adjustment is a five-member committee appointed by the City Council to interpret and apply the City’s zoning regulations. Members serve five-year terms and play an important role in ensuring fair and consistent enforcement of the City’s zoning ordinance.
The Board reviews zoning appeals, considers special exceptions, and may grant variances when strict enforcement of the zoning ordinance would cause unnecessary hardship.

The Board of Adjustments and Planning & Zoning commissions do occasionally have a vacant position. When that happens, the City Council decides on an individual they would like to appoint to fill the vacancy. City staff places the requested appointment on the agenda at the next City Council meeting and the City Council votes to either approve or deny the appointment.
To improve the process of finding applicants, city staff collects applications to keep on file. At the time of a vacancy, staff will contact applicants from the list to verify they are still interested in sitting on the board before being placed in front of the City Council for approval. To remain clear, submitting an application is not an automatic acceptance of the position.
If you are interested in submitting your name to the list for membership on a board or commission, click below to get the Board Application form. You can then print the form, fill it out, and deliver it to City Hall.
