Permits & Applications

The City of Alburnett requires permits and applications for certain activities to ensure safety, compliance with City Code, and effective coordination of public services. Below are links to commonly used forms and applications. Please review the details for each before submitting your request to City Hall. 

Special Event Permit

A Special Event Permit is required for any event held on public property, or on private property where 200 or more people will be present at one time. All special event permits must receive City Council approval before the event takes place.


Applications must be completed in full before being submitted to the Council for review.

Building Permit

Planning to build a new structure or make improvements to an existing one? Please obtain the required permits before beginning any site work. It is the property owner’s responsibility to ensure that all necessary permits are in place.


Effective March 1, 2020, building permits for the City of Alburnett are processed through the Linn County Building Division.

Fence Permit

A Fence Permit is required for all new fence installations and for repairs or modifications to existing fences. There is no fee to obtain a fence permit.


If you plan to place a fence within 3 feet of your property line, you must have a Fence Agreement signed by all adjacent property owners before beginning construction.

Community Sign Application

The City of Alburnett Community Sign located next to City Hall is available for messages that promote non-commercial community events, recognize local accomplishments, or welcome visitors to town.


Only non-profit organizations may request messages, and applications must be submitted to City Hall at least five (5) business days before the requested display date. Approved messages are typically displayed for up to two weeks or until the date of the event, whichever comes first.


Messages may not include advertising, political content, or solicitations by for-profit organizations.

Open Records Request

The City of Alburnett is committed to transparency and follows the provisions of Iowa Code Chapter 22 to provide public access to City records.


Requests to inspect or obtain copies of public records must be directed to the City Clerk, who serves as the City’s lawful custodian of records. Requests may be made in writing, by phone, or by email, and will be reviewed promptly.

Encroachment Permit

An Encroachment Permit is required for any structure or object placed on, over, or within City-owned property, right-of-way, or easement. Examples include temporary displays, private improvements, or other uses that extend into public areas.


Applicants must submit a completed form, a site plan, and any required insurance or health certificates. All permits are subject to review and approval by City Council.

Display Fireworks Permit

A Display Fireworks Permit must be approved by the City Council prior to any public fireworks display within the City of Alburnett, in accordance with Ordinance 41.14.


Applications must be submitted to City Hall at least 30 days before the planned display date. The permit requires information about the event, operator qualifications, insurance coverage, and fire prevention measures.
